ICEM Rio Tinto Network
Welcome to the ICEM network for unions on all continents organising within Rio Tinto, one of the world's biggest mining companies.
This network of the 20-million-strong International Federation of Chemical, Energy, Mine and General Workers' Unions (ICEM), aims to promote solidarity, mutual support and information exchange between Rio Tinto workers and their unions worldwide.
After a sustained campaign by the ICEM and its affiliates, collective bargaining issues in Rio Tinto's Australian operations have now been resolved.
ICEM General Secretary Fred Higgs commented on 27 April 2001: "The ICEM is now in the early stages of discussion with Rio Tinto to agree a process by which we could conclude a global agreement."
In December 2000, Rio Tinto was among the signatories to a set of voluntary principles on security and human rights in the oil, gas and mining industries. The ICEM had taken part in the drafting of these principles.
