ICEM and HIV/AIDS

The ICEM firmly believes that HIV/AIDS is a trade union issue. The International and its affiliates are uniquely placed to make an important contribution in the fight against the pandemic through workplace activities.

ICEM’s HIV/AIDS project has been running since 2005. The present project cycle covers the years 2007 and 2008. The project deals with global aspects to reverse the spread of HIV/AIDS and regional aspects to train national coordinators in sub-Saharan Africa. This HIV/AIDS section of the ICEM’s website contains information on global and regional developments (see articles below), as well as news from affiliates. In addition, an overview of links to other important HIV-AIDS sites is available. Also available is an overview of useful background materials on HIV-AIDS

The ICEM produces an HIV/AIDS e-bulletin (see article list below for previous versions), which is published monthly and sent to affiliates and interested individuals. For more information on the ICEM and HIV/AIDS, including on how to receive the e-bulletin, please contact

For World Aids Day, 1 December 2007, the ICEM published this campaign leaflet. For further material and campaign ideas, go to the website of the World AIDS Campaign www.worldaidscampaign.org.

In June 2006, the ICEM released the ICEM HIV/AIDS Training Manual for Collective Bargaining in English, French and Spanish. Written by the ICEM’s regional HIV/AIDS coordinator, and piloted by our National HIV/AIDS Coordinators, the manual gives a basis to negotiate protections for people living with HIV/AIDS.

The ICEM also published a Guide on HIV/AIDS Resources and Funding, which is available in EnglishFrench and Spanish. With funding resources decentralised and largely accessible at the national level, the introductory part refers to small-scale funding from national AIDS commissions and resources from companies.

It also gives fact-sheets on intergovernmental organisations such as ILOAIDS, UNAIDS, the Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria, WHO and the World Bank and lists a number of foundations and NGOs fighting against HIV/AIDS. An annex explains in more detail the Global Fund, its structures and procedures.
