A recently released study by the Human Science Research Council of South Africa’s Witwatersrand University reveals that the country’s mining industry is becoming more and more reliant on short-term contract workers and casual labour. Mine safety in South Africa was enhanced on 21 November when the country’s Parliament passed amendments to the Mine Health and Safety law. The legislation must now go to President Kgalema Motlanthe for his signature before becoming effective.
