Some 4,000 union members of ICEM affiliate Sindicato Unico Trabajores del Neumático Argentina (SUTNA) launched a 48-hour strike on 25 July against three tyre manufacturing companies, Bridgestone-Firestone, Pirelli, and Argentine-based FATE. The union has been deadlocked since April in 2008 wage negotiations with the major rubber makers.

| Goodyear to Close South Pacific Tyre Plant in Australia at End of 2008 |

Australia will be left with only one tyre manufacturing plant at the close of 2008, following Goodyear Tire and Rubber Co.’s decision to close its wholly-owned subsidiary, South Pacific Tyres. The company announced on 26 June that 600 rubber workers will lose their jobs when its Somerton car and light truck tyre operation shuts in the northern suburbs of Melbourne, Victoria.

A 14-day tyre strike by 4,000 members of ICEM affiliate Lastik-İş in Turkey ended Friday night, 13 June, and workers at three multinational rubber companies were back on their jobs for the afternoon shift on 14 June.
